You might also try Untangle, which can monitor both internal and external
bandwidth.  I work for Untangle so I'm obviously a little bit biased, but
we are GPLv2 and super easy to setup and use.  Untangle also runs other
network apps like firewall, router, VPN, anti-spam, anti-spyware, etc.  12
open source applications in total.

Yes, saga is right :)

I was quite surprised to see that there is a vmware appliance for this
software. I'm downloading it now and will run it through the paces.
