Kids learning programming

Anybody have any suggestions on where I can get some free or nearly free
programming books to give as awards to the top performers in a summer
programming class for kids?

It's taken considerable effort to convince most of them that you really DO
have to be accurate on syntax to get a program to run; however, on the
other end of the spectrum, I have a few who are taking to it and one who
will undoubtedly grow up to be a developer or some type of engineer.

In particular, I'm looking for Java related material (I don't even want to
hear it from the Perl die-hards) to present as awards to promote the
concept that excellence really is rewarded sometimes and to make the
others wish they'd paid more attention in classes that involved thinking
before they spend the next 20 years bagging groceries at Safeway.

Any ideas?
