How do you ask your nameserver is he's up or not

Three things to do are:
1. Check your message log to see if the named service started. Usually it 
says something on the lines of:
Sep 12 12:03:00 www named[25637]: running

2. Use nslookup. If your server is local use:
root at www /root]# nslookup - 127.0.0.1
   You should get a command prompt so type in anything. If there is a 
response, DNS is working, otherwise it may freeze and then DNS most likely 
is not working.

3. Use telnet.
root at www /root]# telnet 127.0.0.1 53
If telnet connects, DNS is most likely working. Otherwise telnet will hang.

Hope that helps.

As for the APPLE.COM thing. they are just registered domains that people 
thought would be funny, apparently the first one was created a long time 
ago, and hopefully not in the last week. Running whois on MICROSOFT.COM 
results in a longer list. Seems to be a popular site to smash on.
