RedHat 7.3 and a missing X server

Now we are getting some info...

Check out /var/log for any XFree86.* log/error messages.

How does it fail?.... does it give you any output at the terminal when it 
pukes.  Make sure there are no stale locks in /tmp  there can be hidden .X* 
locks in /tmp.  Delete them if there are.
