I use Debian, not RedHat and did not have a problem with this.

What kind of problem is it having with cipher.o ? missing libs? Complaints
about something missing? I assume you have run ./configure with the
flags/args appropriate for your system (MD5 password, shadow
disabled/enabled, PAM etc)
