Yes, WebDAV is perfect for this. Done over SSL, the web server not only
deals with a more secure mothod fore clients publishing files, but also
permits you to have service combined into having the web server "do it
all!"

Links to help you with this:
http://www.webdav.org/
http://www.webdav.org/mod_dav/
http://httpd.apache.org/
http://www.modssl.org/
http://www.openssl.org/

MacOS 9 users can use Goliath (an extra application.)
Linux users can try neon or cadaver (I have tried cadaver and like it for
most of what I need to do - i tis ftp-like.)

Programs like netscape composer can use DAV for web page publishing, and
so can DreamWeaver *but* at this time, DreamWeaver does not appear to
really support SSL for this. (Though you can enter an
https://based.usr.tdl/path/to/webdav/dir/ the connection attempt is
actually made vit http, not https.

It is very cool. Anymore, the only real/genuine use of ftp IMHO is for
anonymous ftp. As for non-anonymous, scp and to some extent sftp can be
used in one replacement scenario, and WebDAV for most/many web page
publishers.

SMB/IP and AppleShare/IP were two alternatives, but some ISP are
bliuocking connections coming into their networks with those dest ports
(137,138,139 and 548) and some block packets with these as src too!
(blech!)

It seems or feels like WebDAV is the way the industry is going. Use of
tools within the GUI for MacOS X and all modern version of Windows since
Windows 95 support this.

Tied with mod_ldap and authentication via ldap, you can actually have a
true central authentication system - even for enterprise level
organizations.

FTP is, or should be dead. Think Monty Python and The Quest for the Holy
Grail and the "bring out the dead" scene. "I'm not dead yet"

Read the start of this page to get an idea of this story. Think "ftp" when
"the old man" is described.

Dont trust the old man. He wont be better tomorrow. Bop the old man on the
head, and toss him on the cart.
