all of a sudden i booted up my laptop after not using for a while, and
the boot up process stops after the line:

Configuring kernel parameters: [ OK ]

if i hit ^C (cntrl-C) INIT starts, but other things start failing and
eventually it all stops before syslog can start. i booted with a rescue
disk and tried to inspect the logs, but like i said, this happens before
syslog can start, so no logs. :(

when i reboot (cntrl-alt-del) it hangs at:

"Syncing hardware clock to system time "

then i found this google groups article:

http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&selm=8uo7uj%24aif%241%40nnrp1.deja.com

which led me to check the BIOS system time, and sure enough it was stuck
in the past (about 3 days in the past), and my attempts to update the
time had no affect on it keeping the time.

so the above is for archival purposes in case someone else runs into the
same problem, my real question is, does this mean i need a new CMOS
battery, or is there something else i should be doing?

augie.
