that's ok. linux is different than windows, which is why most of us like
it, but for you (as for all beginners) it means having to learn the
tricks of the trade.

ok, now we are getting to the real problem. i was seceretly wondering
whether this was a proxy problem or really a network problem. so let's
get to work:

i started writing some pretty detailed instructions, but mitch and micah
already replied with what i was thinking so try and do what they suggest
and post back your results, verbosity welcomed.

i'm sure you're not stupid. linux is not windows though, and so it is to
be expected that you will have to do some learning to get it all down.
although most of the tools mentioned ifconfig (ipconfig in windows),
route, ping, are all resident on windows machines, you just may have
never used them.
