most distrobutions come with c++ stuff (code, compiler, debugger, IDE)
out of the box, but java (because of its proprietary nature) does not.

the above is sun's java on linux site. i've never done any java
development, but i did get the developer kit to work (easily) on my
linux machine so i could play with robocode: http://robocode.net/ ;)
