Just why not use Knoppix for the base installation and 
modify the /etc/apt/sources.list file for stable and proceed
from there?  All Knoppix really is, is a bootable CD
version of Debian after all.

Second thought, which kernel are you doing for the Debian
base installation?  The default for 3.0r0 is 2.2 still,
not 2.4 (Knoppix 3.1 uses 2.4.19-??? per memory).  And unless 
the card is bad, it should pick up things from there.

Just some ideas, FWIW.
