I think if you are looking for a MTA that does maildir, you shouldn't
use sendmail.

If you have to go looking for a how-to anyway, why not learn qmail?

qmail has some of the best documentation ever written online, for free:

It's very secure and doesn't have the same security issues as sendmail.
In fact, there to date hasn't ever been a single security hole found
(Anyone else know otherwise?).

It was designed with security in mind.

Also it has great mailing lists full of helpful people (it's also
archived for quick Q&A).

You can do everything that sendmail can with one "feature" lacking, a
remote shell ;-)
