[NBLUG/talk] extended fs

Being fairly new to Linux I have some very basic questions.  If this is not the place to ask, please point me in the proper directions.  Thanks.

If I have a working Fedore Core 1 system can I create a new (extended) partition without hosing the OS?  Would I use the mke2fs?  This system only has a /root /boot and /swap filesystems on hda1 hda2 and hda3.
