Take a look in /usr/local/etc/jabberd  you are not done configuring yet.  You 
need to create a database with mysql or postgres and edit the configuration 
files c2s.xml and sm.xml

It helps to read the documentation on the jabberd website.

Here is ps mine running on Fedora Core 1.  You may want to run it as another 
user... nobody or create a jabber user.
