[NBLUG/talk] Blue Screen of... Suse?

Hey:

I'm running SuSE 8.2 on my laptop and I just recently upgraded
everything from pretty much a basic install to what's current on the
apt-get repository at gwdg.de.

My problem is that now at apparantly random intervals, I get tossed
out of X and get the Blue Screen of SuSE - not quite the text console,
but essentially the same thing.  On the screen are a few error
messages, and I can't read all of them because they have scrolled off
the screen.  I can return to X by typing 'startx' at the command
line.  It then seems to be working normally, until it happens again.
It's very annoying.

It was happenening earlier, and I got messages referring to there
being no group named gdm, so I created it and it worked again.  Now I
seem to have another problem.

One of the messages says something like:

The application 'gnome-session' has lost its connection to the display

I'm of course embarrassed that I didn't write down the error messages
at the time.  I will post what I can the next time it happens.  But in
the meantime, is there a log from which I could see these messages?

At the bottom of this email, I've pasted some output from
/var/log/messages that seems related, but is unintelligible to me.

I've googled some, but haven't found anything helpful yet.
