Hello,

~ Other than resources used, the other factor you might want to
consider when it comes to window managers is ease of finding and
starting applications as well as configuring your desktop.GNOME and
KDE (especially KDE) are good for someone fresh from the world of
Windoze who are used to doing everything by point-and-click and having
a Start Program menu which resembles what a Windoze user is used to.
By the way, GNOME and KDE applications will (usually) run on almost
any X Windows manager. It's mostly a matter of taste- I personally run
Windowmaker or Blackbox window managers most of the time.

~ Af for your home computer, if you have the resources to comfortably
run and store both GNOME and KDE it's good to have both, again if for
no other reason than to have available the applications that often
come with these window managers. If not, try both and go with the one
which works best for you. You definitely have enough RAM for either
window manager; I can comfortably run either WM on my desktop and it
has 640Mb RAM, with a 700MHz AMD Duron CPU.

Hope this helps.
