Mozilla is currently at version 1.6. That may or may not be part of your
problem.

Are you sure this is the correct plugins directory for your version of
Mozilla? What happens when you type:

about:plugins

in the location bar of Mozilla? Do you see the Java plugin, or any other
plugins?

Works for me with Mozilla 1.6 and Firefox 0.8 with JRE 1.4.2, so it can be
done.
