hehe...this ain't windows...no need to reinstall ;)

do you have the laptop booting into X, or into just a text console and then
you run startx?  have you tried logging in as a different user using gnome? 
if you login as a different user and gnome starts, then it's most likely
just the gnome conf directories in your home directory have become corrupt. 
if you login under a text console and do a 'ls -a' you'll see lots of
dot-directories (directories that start with a period.)  a number of those
are related to gnome as you'll see.  you'll loose all your gnome settings,
but you could try removing those and then try loggin in again.
