Alright,
   I got some help and figured out what was up.  Despite some typoes in my
error messages, all of what I did was technically correct.  What I
failed to do was compile in support for my specific disc and ide
chipset.  By doing so, now my kernel has the ability to access my disc.
 Evidently, the initrd could be accessed but the rest couldn't.  I
don't necessarily understand why this is the case, but everything works
now.

BTW, for anyone who cares, BootSplash works great!!!!
I'll have the laptop with BootSplash with me at the installfest if anyone
wants to see it in action.
