I prefer trillian ( http://trillian.cc ) for windows, but GAIM works great.
Its almost exactly the same as if you're running it on Linux.

Well, then, I can think of two other possible workarounds/solutions:

1. Do file transfers work if the other user is also using Gaim? If so,
anyone know if the Windows version of Gaim is any good?

2. Has anyone used other AIM-compatible instant messaging programs for
Linux, e.g. Kopete? Any comments on them? Do file transfers work with
them?

(I'm not particularly interested in installing AOL's software, both
because it's not open-source, and for some crazy reason their server
forces me to download binary packages in ASCII mode. Go figure.)
