I don't know what URL the Gaim FAQ has, but if you go here:
http://aim.aol.com/aimnew/Aim/register.adp
(or go to www.aim.com and pick "Get Help/Starting Out/Registration" and
click the link in the first answer)
you can create an AIM account using just a web browser.  Pretty simple.  You
might need to follow a link in the email they send you, or something like
that.
