If one is using the KDE environment, KTTSD (KDE text to speech daemon)
and its KTTSDmgr (the KTTSD manager) are very useful.

Highlight some text, then click the little parrot-head icon in the systray,
and select "Speak clipboard."  I'm certain this can be turned into a
hotkey combo, too.
