I don't run ubuntu so I can't speak for that distro specifically, but 
I've used 2 different cards, both of which had good support under Linux. 
  In order of preference:

1) Intel Pro Wireless cards have good support from the ipw2100 and 
ipw2200 linux packages.

2) I have a D-Link DWL-G650 card that works well with the madwifi package.
