For good linux support (probably all linux distros, especially Ubuntu) use a
card with an atheros chipset, and get the drivers from madwifi.org.  For
WPA/WPA2 you can use wpa_supplicant, and you can even set up an access point
with a wireless card on a linux station with a program called host ap.  I have a
madwifi card, and it works well in linux; the drivers have a lot of features and
are actively developed.  On madwifi.org there is a list of hardware known to
work with their drivers, which includes most hardware with an atheros chipset.
