everyone is very welcome.  i'm just glad it ended happily.  i was fearing
major hardware failure and therefore lots of money needing to be thrown at
the problem.  the box is still up and stable as of this morning.

i'd like to send a special thanks to dan kinon and sonic.net for helping me
get the cpu fan replaced.  dan took a video with his phone of the old
fan..and a picture of the new fan.  i hope to get those online sometime
today...for those who are insanely curious ;)
