[NBLUG/talk] OCR programs

I've been using xsane to scan in some tax documents and send them to my
daughter in Japan.  Unfortunately, they arrive garbled (either her Mac or
the provider at her end) so I decided to try using OCR to send them as
text.  That doesn't work very well either, I could probably type them in
faster than I can correct them.  Are there any better OCR programs out there
than gocr?  Does anyone know how best to scan in using xsane to make the OCR
part work better?
