[NBLUG/talk] clamd signature processing on service start

I'm trying to set up clamd on a mail server to scan emails, but I
can't get the clamd socket /var/run/clamav/clamd (as defined in the
config file) to start up on a timely basis. The socket does show up,
but it appears to take about an hour of clamd processing the
signatures running before the socket appears. While this is happening
mail delivery is delayed until clamd finishes and the socket appears.

Does anyone know of a way to get the service to start more quickly or
have clamd process the signatures (this is not freshclam, but
clamav-daemon) in a shorter time period?

I'm running Debian Etch x86 with Exim4 and clamav .90 (latest debian
port) on both systems.

Thank you!
