My wife has 8.10 on her laptop, and we installed KDE 3.5 from a package
source (this was before the KDE 3 remix was available).

Is 'startx' what you want, vs. "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start"?
(i.e., do you get precisely the environment you want?)
