[NBLUG/talk] WUBI-installed Ubuntu damaged by automatic updates

WUBI lets you dual-boot using the Windows bootloader, with Linux
installed within the Windows filesystem.

My laptop that is running a WUBI-installed version of Ubuntu 10.04 had
been working fine and I had even done a couple of automatic updates,
just the regular ones, not the version upgrade. But an update a few
weeks ago killed the installation. I'd get a flash of some grub message
and then the laptop would reboot again.

In the past I recall the automatic update screen would sometimes have a
checkbox for WUBI users to keep me from updating something that would
not be compatible with WUBI. This time there was no warning checkbox.

So I did a full reinstall(I am good about backups so no big deal) and
then it blew up the same way when I did the first automatic update.

I can't find anything relating to my situation on the web, mostly all
the WUBI-death news regards version upgrade issues.

I guess it's time for me to get smart about this. I figure it's either
GRUB or kernel upgrades that are killing the install. So I can manually
deselect the offending update if I know which one. I figure it's
probably GRUB. But when the kernel gets updated GRUB always needs to be
reconfigured, so I don't know.

Any ideas? I like WUBI better than the normal dual-boot installation
except for this one problem :(

Thanks,

Bob
