To answer my own question re: having 2 monitors and wanting a different 
root window image on each, if you use Gnome, aside from a kludge, it is 
not presently possible. If you use KDE, right click on one root window 
and then 'Configure desktop,' and from there it's a peeza kake. Do the 
same for the other monitor and you got it.

The kludge for Gnome is to combine two images into one (using eg, gimp) 
and having that one be your root window image. IF you use xinerama, the 
single image will span both monitors and if you've done it right, each 
one will have a different background image. Meh.
