LTSP: Raiders of the Lost Mainframe

Start: 2008/10/14 - 7:30pm

End: 2008/10/14 - 8:45pm

description:

In the beginning there were only the mainframes. Administration only
required configuration of one system. Users accessed the mainframe from
dumb terminals. Everyone had access to the same resources and had the same
software, because everyone was on the same system. Then came the personal
computer. Users all got their own systems, and system administration
became exponentially more difficult. LTSP gives us a way to get the
terminal server, singular administration and control we admins want and
still give users the warm fuzzy interface, speed and freedom they want.
One system, one set of updates, one place to make changes. We're going to
look in to some of the history of LTSP, overview the technology involved,
and some of the many potential applications. Finally we'll look at the
best way to implement LTSP, and how its working in production in our
corporate environment.

General Meeting - PXE Magic

description:

These days most modern computers support PXE (Preboot eXecution Environment) booting--booting from the network. Booting from the network allows you to do all sorts of interesting things including setting up thin clients, automate kickstart environments and more. In this talk Kyle Rankin will discuss how to set up a PXE boot server and will cover thin clients, kickstarting computers completely over the network, PXE booting rescue discs, and how to throw it all in a menu system that lets you choose what to boot.

General Meeting - WRT54G Part 2

description:

Matthew Smith will be giving a talk about advanced usage of Linux on the WRT54G.

Short description of talk:

Topic 1: Using the WRT54G to make a cheap network bridge.

Topic 2: Using the WRT54G to monitor and control the physical world. I'll
talk about how you can monitor input pins and turn on/off output pins. With
a simple circuit (which I'll show) you can control anything you want.
