I made a mistake... (wireless Linksys 802.11b PCI for less than $50? - Wrong.)

Hello NBLUG-ers

When I am wrong, I'll admit it. (I was wrong.)

As it turns out, I have been bad and misinformed my fellow nblug
members; I saw the ad, but did not read it well.

At the last meeting I stated I thought there were PCI based 802.11b
(Wireless ethernet) cards for less than $50. The cards I recalled seeing
are actually as the speakers stated:

They are actually the more common PCMCIA to PCI bus bridges and require
the PCMCIA cards in addition to the PCMCIA to PCI bridge that costs ~$50

Linksys PCI card not fully integrated PCI card but PCMCIA cardbus to PCI
bridge:

(I have not checked to see if this cardbus and chipset are supported by
the pcmcia-cs package for linux, so the above is *not* a suggestion to
buy it. You should investigate the PCMCIA cardbus to PCI device you buy on
your own.)

Other PCMCIA to PCI bridge:

(same disclaimer)

Ones that may be fully integrated into a PCI card but cost much more than
$50 or the price of one of the above PCMCIA to PCI bridges and a new
PCMCIA card:

http://www2.warehouse.com/product.asp?pf%5Fid=DEC4457&cat=pc

I would bet that support for the PCMCIA cards would be better on average
over the PCI only cards. As long as the PCMCIA to PCI bus is supported by
the PCMCIA-CS project, it would probably be cheaper to buy a bridge and
PCMCIA card.

Sorry for the bad information on wireless PCI cards for 802.11b for less
than $50. (Their PCMCIA to PCI bridge is less than $50.)

Anyone want to start the flogging process? I think they have wireless PCI
based 802.11b whips/rods from linksys for less than $50... ;-)

-ME
