This is a problem with your terminal configuration. I suggest reconfiguring
how you terminal program sends the backspace key. ^H or ^? (The caret
signifying a ctrl signal) are the typical standards. For a more specific
answer, I'd need to be in front of the problem machine.

I just checked my quick reference guide, VI recognizes ^H for a backspace.
Your terminal programs are probably sending ^? to your Redhat box which
would expain the beep.
I also remember something about 'stty erase ^?' fixing the problem. It's
been a long time though, since I usually just modify the terminal prog.
Someone check me on that, please.
