apt-get has gone all cracky

i'm new to debian so i'm not quite sure what to make of this little
problem. i am trying to build a secure wireless gateway with an old laptop
and of course linux, but i need some modules for the wireless card. i
found the modules in the deb package pcmcia-modules-2.2.20 which requires
me to update my stock potato kernel. and that's where everything goes
wacky.

below is what i could capture from stdout and stderr. basically everytime
after it starts unpacking the kernel-image fsck starts running and it will
run sometimes all day or just a few minutes, but it for sure happens every
time.

Reading Package Lists...
Building Dependency Tree...
The following extra packages will be installed:
  kernel-image-2.2.20
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  pcmcia-modules-2.2.20
1 packages upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
1 packages not fully installed or removed.
Need to get 0B/6346kB of archives. After unpacking 14.8MB will be used.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n]
