hi Chris,
i've see that duplication on lots of small routers...but it does answer
correctly as the gateway:
here the tail of a traceroute to .226:
15 POS1-0.XR2.PAO1.ALTER.NET (152.63.54.78) 58.096 ms 97.235 ms 101.755 ms
16 188.at-3-1-0.HR1.PAO1.ALTER.NET (152.63.54.197) 138.616 ms 104.596 ms 119.305 ms
17 324.ATM2-0.VR1.PAO1.ALTER.NET (152.63.54.249) 132.799 ms 109.168 ms 108.451 ms
18 63.113.184.226 (63.113.184.226) 105.086 ms 85.438 ms 84.003 ms
19 63.113.184.226 (63.113.184.226) 146.269 ms 112.785 ms 82.401 ms
with the duplication (and some congestion prolly nearer me than u)
but to the gateway address .225:
15 POS1-0.XR2.PAO1.ALTER.NET (152.63.54.78) 62.984 ms 76.486 ms 68.966 ms
16 188.at-3-1-0.HR1.PAO1.ALTER.NET (152.63.54.197) 65.381 ms 73.192 ms 60.112 ms
17 324.ATM2-0.VR1.PAO1.ALTER.NET (152.63.54.249) 65.348 ms 90.547 ms 75.213 ms
18 63.113.184.225 (63.113.184.225) 70.325 ms 193.018 ms 146.286 ms
no duplication.
but to a non-responding host, the router is responding with the target
address .228:
S1-0.XR2.PAO1.ALTER.NET (152.63.54.78) 50.854 ms 68.145 ms 50.597 ms
16 188.at-3-0-0.HR1.PAO1.ALTER.NET (152.63.54.205) 61.910 ms 42.027 ms 76.351 ms
17 324.ATM2-0.VR1.PAO1.ALTER.NET (152.63.54.249) 65.364 ms 86.443 ms 76.370 ms
18 63.113.184.228 (63.113.184.228) 102.191 ms 94.241 ms 98.186 ms

it's not nice, but i see a lot of this behavior where the gateway device
doesn't respond with its own address unless it is the terminal address.
from the inside of the netblock, it looks normal. so it's not you and
not just netopia but it doesn't explain the original problem.
the arin swip record shows uunet while the traceroute show alter.net but
that's business these days:
