Digital Video on Linux?

In History of the Americas, we are beginning video projects, and I'm looking 
for digital video tools that are more powerful than a simple iMac.  I would 
imagine that if Dreamworks, ILM, and Pixar are using Linux, there must be 
tools out there for working with digital video on Linux (i.e. capturing, 
editing, exporting, etc.).  Does anyone know of any such programs?  Has 
anyone here worked with any such programs?  Or are they all programs that 
these studios wrote for themselves?
