Strange crashes that make me say "huh?"

What are you using for video drivers?  This is a shot in the dark, but the
only time i've ever experienced consistent hard lockups was when i tried
using Nvidia's agpgart rather than the one that comes with the kernel.

One other thing to try (and to help pinpoint the prob.), is to tell Nautilus
*not* to draw the desktop.  Oh, and did you try starting gnome as a new user?
Basically someone who doesn't have any pre-existing .gnome prefs?
