GNOME or GTK?

I think this comes down to your preference, from a user standpoint you have 
to know a little bit about what gnome is all about before it makes sense, 
www.gnome.org .  As Eric said, if you run gnome then you should install the 
gnome versions as they tie in with Gnome's CORBA - Common Object Request 
Broker Architecture and ORbit model.  It really comes down to the 
programmer as these are basically toolkits used to create graphical user 
interfaces, the toolkits tie into a wide variety of programming 
languages....so you can program gnome apps in many languages.  The two most 
popular widget toolkits being gtk+ and Qt, older widget toolkits being 
Motif, lesstif, etc.

I am still trying to sort it out also as I am not a programmer by 
trade..... ; )
