ms word vs html ?

There are all sorts of academics, IMHO.  For myself, when I get 
something in an advanced Microsoft format, I just send it back as 
unreadable.  I recently got one such, but tried it in my Linux 
machine and it opens fine in KWord! (Including the french accents 
that weren't visible in a printout that the originator had given me).
