RH 8.0 freezing on login

I just installed Red Hat 8.0.  The initial startup had sound working and I 
believe the network card has been found.

When I try to log in with the graphical login, all seems fine for a few 
seconds until the GUI freezes (mouse won't move, no disk activity) at the 
Red Hat 8.0 login (without having seen any desktop icons).  Text logins on 
ctrl-alt-F2 work fine.

Any suggestions?
