My opinion, go to Radio Shack and get one of their cassette-erasers. 
The AC field is much better than a plain magnet, leaves the tape in a 
neutral, rather than polarized, condition.  Give it a few extra 
passes, since the coercivity of digital tape is higher than for audio 
tapes.  I wouldn't try this on a hard-disk, though, I don't think it 
will reformat if the tracking is wiped.  But I haven't tried.
