That was it! I have no idea why the permissions would've changed, that's
probably why it never occurred to me. :)
Thanks for your valuable insight!

That sounds like a permissions error off of the top of my head.
On my box I have it setup like this:
_[error at eris:/dev] [Wed Jul 09] [10:56 AM]_
$ ls -al /dev/mixer*
crwxrwxrwx 1 root audio 14, 0 Mar 14 2002 /dev/mixer
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 16 Mar 14 2002 /dev/mixer1
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 32 Mar 14 2002 /dev/mixer2
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 48 Mar 14 2002 /dev/mixer3
_[error at eris:/dev] [Wed Jul 09] [10:56 AM]_
$ ls -al /dev/mixer* /dev/dsp*
crwxrwxrwx 1 root audio 14, 3 Mar 14 2002 /dev/dsp
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 19 Mar 14 2002 /dev/dsp1
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 35 Mar 14 2002 /dev/dsp2
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 51 Mar 14 2002 /dev/dsp3
crwxrwxrwx 1 root audio 14, 0 Mar 14 2002 /dev/mixer
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 16 Mar 14 2002 /dev/mixer1
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 32 Mar 14 2002 /dev/mixer2
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 48 Mar 14 2002 /dev/mixer3
and my user is:
_[error at eris:/dev] [Wed Jul 09] [10:57 AM]_
$ groups
error audio
Are you in your audio group?
also if you want to test your sound card Real Quick Now, give it this as
root:
cat /proc/kcore > /dev/dsp
Do you hear industrial noise yet?
;-)
