I am not a Debian user.

However coincidentally the last local LUG meeting in my area a
presentation was being made on installing Debian.

It just so happens the machine that was being used had a 3com nic. I saw
the presenter run into the exact same problems you describe.

Even after switching to a virtual terminal and loading the driver
manually.

It appears that the module is possibly compiled in the kernel. The
presenter went on with the presentation despite the problems selecting
an loading a driver for the nic. However as the presenter proceeded with
the install the network card worked.

I was not able to touch the machine for confirmation. However I bet on a
console screen running dmesg would provided info on the nic.

So aside from the problems you ran into were you able to proceed with
the install? Did you attempt to?
