Turn up yer mixer volume.  ;)  The Gnome way to do it is to run
"gnome-volume-control" -- though, personally, I prefer xmixer.  (xmixer
doesn't come with Redhat 8, I had to retrieve it from an earlier
distribution.)  I usually turn up both the master volume and the pcm
volume.

Oh, sorry about that.  I did need it personally, but I did a custom install.
