Wasn't this due also to the fact that the Romans didn't have a Positional
Numbering System like we do (digits in sequence from left to right). It's
awful hard to do complex math with those Roman numerals. Even if you use a
pen and paper you still end up having to do most of the math in your head!
It's a lot easier to loose track of what you are trying to do that way.
