RedHat says you need 192MB for a graphics display.  48MB sounds pretty
damned reasonable.

The why is because gnome and kde are so bloated that you would be
constantly swapping if you don't have enough RAM.  It would run, it just
wouldn't be usable it would be so slow and unresponsive.
