While I agree with Street that Slackware is more 'pure' Linux than SuSE
(and he's TOO right in stating the install looks like m$ Windows- and,
regrettably, more so, it seems, with each upgrade), if what you want is
to get out  the gates of Gates, a plug-and-pray Linux distro such as Red
Hat,  SuSE, or Mandrake might provide the running system first, as well
as a base system to fall back on when you wipe out the kernel or a hard
drive partition or two or all. My experience was, after futile struggles
with Caldera and Red Hat (I could get them to boot up but Internet
connection wasn't happening), I finally got a SuSE system going.  It was
also the first distro I found that worked with USB. After I got a fully
operational Linux box going there was no looking back.
