Hi Dave,

I had a winmodem experience that may be useful for you to hear about. I have a 
machine with onboard sound and onboard winmodem. Under linux I can have either 
sound or winmodem drivers functioning, not both. I googled evidence of this happening 
to other people. So perhaps you should try disabling your sound driver and then loading 
the winmodem driver.
