some random ideas:

Make sure /boot/grub/device.map is correct.

For instance, on my desktop it is:
(hd0)	/dev/sda

You'd most likely need:
(hd0)	/dev/hda

Is there perhaps a toshiba hibernation partition in the mix ?

Posting your 'menu.lst' couldn't hurt.

p.s. that's an 'ell' in 'lst' not a one, as in menu.list
(I thought it was a one for a long time too ;-)

Hmm, could that be the problem ?
