for the most part, i agree with mark. you don't need to use a fancy sql
backend if you just want to play - berkeleydb will work just dandy.
i whole heartedly agree that you should read the docs if you haven't.
jabberd is a rather complicated beast. i've had *some* good luck with the
quickstart guide for 2.x:

i say some, since i didn't get it working properly the first time, and
haven't had time to go back and fix what i think i did wrong. at least i
was able to get things running on the first try. i will mention, though,
that i built an rpm from the source code. the spec file came from a
submission to the jabberd mailing list that i tweaked a bit to fit our
environment:
