[NBLUG/talk] Gaining the full benefits of a 5-button mouse?

I just upgraded to a 5-button mouse on my Debian box.  So far, I can use
the left, right, and whell buttons normally and without any difficulty,
but I can't figure out how to configure the two extra buttons.  It seems
that in some applications, button 4 acts as an "AutoScroll" button
(click, then drag in the direction I want to scroll), and in others it
does the same thing as the wheel button (#2).  In all applications,
button 5 seems to duplicate the effect of the right button (#3).

What do I need to do to customize the behavior of the extra buttons?
